How to get involved as an individual, long-term care facility or caregiver
Senior citizens frequently face challenges related to isolation and loneliness. With the current social distancing measures in place, these challenges are exacerbated and senior citizens are more vulnerable than ever to isolation. Through the Xaverian Pen Pal Project, we are looking to connect St. FX students (and other interested community members) with seniors living alone in the community or in long-term care facilities in order to facilitate new relationships and promote positive inter-generational connections.

At this time, we are looking to connect with seniors in the community who would be interested in communicating with a pen pal. We are also interested in working directly with long-term care facilities to coordinate the best ways to communicate with residents based on current needs and resources. If you are affiliated with a long-term care facility, please indicate this on the sign-up form so that we can get in touch!

Getting started:

Click on the link below and leave your contact information. Please indicate if you have any preferences for who you are paired up with (a St. FX student or elementary/high school student) and if you would be interested in more than one pen pal.

Please indicate if you have any limitations when corresponding with your pen pal. Ideally, we would like to work via email or online video/audio chat like Skype. However, we are looking to accommodate everyone, so telephone calls or "snail mail" are possible options!

You will be contacted with information about the pen pal you have been matched with to begin correspondence! The details and frequency of contact are up to you and your pen pal, however, we are happy to address any concerns and help to facilitate this.

For long-term care facilities: if possible, we are interested in taking advantage of the province's promise to provide 800 iPads to long-term care facilities in order to aid with communication. Please reach out to us directly so that we can speak in greater detail about your needs and how to best execute this program!
